A Detailed Review of 10 Best Convertible Strollers in 2018

Naturally, most parents think about their first babies when buying a stroller. At this time, a potential second baby does not get much thought. But then in no time, baby number two is here while baby number one is still using the stroller. Now you are in a bit of an awkward situation.

You shouldn’t find yourself in this scenario, not when you can invest in a convertible stroller. These are the types of strollers I call “magic baby gear.” Some options transition from a single to a double stroller and back, a bassinet, a travel system, a ride along then back to a single.

Most of the convertibles have seats that can be configured to face different directions. Your kids can face you, one another or face the world as they ride. If you are the type of parent who prefers to get value for their money, then a convertible stroller is what you need.

Things to Consider Before Buying the Best Convertible Strollers

From a broader perspective, all standard strollers function as some kind of convertible strollers. A number of add-ons, reversible seats, switchable seats, and adapters are common features. By adding an infant seat, you convert them to a fancy travel system.

However, not all standard strollers are the best convertible strollers for you. Some have limitations in the number of functions you can convert them into, while some are more affordable than others. To help you decide on what is good for you, here are the things to keep in mind.

1. Number of Use Modes

Let’s us face it, the reason you need a convertible stroller is that you want a baby gear that grows together with your family. When the baby outgrows one feature, you convert it into the next feature instead of buying a new one.

Simply put, the user modes should allow you to use it from infant to toddler age or from a single baby up to 3 kids. It is in this aspect that convertible strollers are not made equal. While simpler models include three usage modes, high-end models like the Baby Jogger City Select have 16+ different configurations.

the reason you need a convertible stroller

While you may not need all those, it does hurt to have unlimited options, right? Most of the products I have reviewed have a good number of modes. They can be used as a bassinet, infant seat carrier, toddler stroller, double tandem, and even triple with the riding option.

List out the possible ways you would want your stroller to able to convert and then decide on the best available options.

2. Your Budget

Like any other purchase, your budget and willingness to spend determine what stroller to buy. The general rule of thumbs is that the more features, accessories and stroller modes you want, the more you should be willing to spend.

the more features, accessories and stroller modes you want

Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. If you do your research well, you can find an affordable stroller with almost all the convertible needs you are looking for. If you are on a tight budget, I have included a couple of low-cost models for you. But for those willing to spend large, the luxurious UPPABaby Vista costs in excess of $1,000.

Prices differ with brands and features. But a decent, well-functioning convertible stroller should cost you about $300 to $800.

3. Available Features

To ensure you get your money’s worth, consider the available features, accessories and safety features. For a newborn age to 6 months, your baby does not have sufficient self-support. At this age, you will need to use a bassinet, a fully reclining seat or a detachable car seat. Of these, the car seat provides you with unrivalled convenience.

reversible toddler stroller seat is appropriate

For older babies (more than 6 months), a reclining, reversible toddler stroller seat is appropriate. An extendable sun canopy is a must feature to shield the rides from wind, rain and direct sunlight. A storage basket under the seat would be good too. Generally, a bigger stroller is best for both you as the parent and the baby.

Some accessories you might want to add in the future. One of these is the gliding board compatibility for your third older toddler. Safety-wise, the stroller must have the handbrake or the foot brake if you are comfortable with them.

Rubber tires and all-wheel suspensions make for a smoother ride. It also allows you to push the stroller on different terrains. For taller parents, a telescopic handlebar would be great. Do you intend to carry the stroller through a flight of stairs? Then weight would be a key consideration.

Which Are Some Of The Best Convertible Strollers?

In today’s article, I am presenting to you a review of 10 of the best convertible strollers currently available in the market. I have taken into account individual features, functionality, versatility, product ratings, and price points when coming up with the list.

This Baby Jogger is a 2016 model, which is a predecessor of the previous 2017 model. It is another popular convertible stroller among parents. Features wise, it provides you most of those on the 2017 model, albeit with the new version being more advanced. For example, the 16+ seating configurations in the new model were originally designed into this one.

This versatile convertible stroller can be used with two stroller seats, a bassinet and an infant car seat. Such capabilities are great because they allow you to adapt your stroller to the baby’s changing needs. With an extra seat, it converts to a double tandem stroller, allowing two kids of different ages to ride together.

Having equal-sized seats on board plays to your advantage as you can alter the various seating arrangements. The kids could face one another, both face forward or back, or alternate directions. In a double stroller mode, you can have two bassinets or have one and a stroller seat.

2017 UPPAbaby VISTA

Via: Amazon

Overview

I am not going to lie to you; this stroller is kind of an expensive one. But for the huge price you pay for it, you get a luxury stroller that expands as your family does. With a single reversible seat, you can use it as a single stroller. When you have another baby, add an extra seat to turn it into a double stroller.

The seat it comes with has a weight limit of 50 pounds but can only be used by babies older than 3 months. It can also convert to a travel system when used with an infant car seat. But remember that you have to buy the adapters separately. Most of the infant car seat models seamlessly fit onto it.

When the third baby arrives, the older one can ride on a glider board accessory of your choice. Seating arrangements can be altered as much as it suits your babies’ comforts. Regular seats can face the front or the rear; two bassinets are accommodated as well as two infant car seats. Basing on whether you have a toddler and a baby, mix these seats as you want.

The four wheels on this stroller have a rubber core, making them suitable for a range of terrains. Both sets of wheels have suspension mechanisms to smoothen out rides for a more pleasant ride.

Using it with the regular seat avails the canopy with an extendable sun visor. This feature shields the baby from the sun’s rays. I love how this canopy slides upwards to create room for the baby’s growth.

You have to buy the infant car seat and bassinet separately as they are not part of the package. The bassinet sold separately has been certified for overnight sleeping. Graco Modes Stroller, Grayson

Via: Amazon

Overview

For parents looking for a low budget convertible stroller, then the Graco Modes stroller is a decent choice. It is actually one of the best convertible strollers currently available. Featuring a 3 in 1 capability, complete with up to 10 riding positions, this stroller is definitely one worth the money spent on it.

A click connects connection system for an infant car seat transforms it into a comfortable travel system for an infant. A reversible stroller seat allows you to alter sitting arrangement in whichever way you want. The reclining seat has 4 positions that ultimately turns the stroller into an infant carrier.

When the baby decides to sit facing forward, the 3-position adjustable leg rest grows with them, ensuring comfort in the process. Another great feature is the lightness of the stroller. It weighs about 22.75 pounds. Minimum and maximum weights of 4 and 50 pounds respectively are recommended for safe use.

At the minimum age, you should use an infant support insert to provide better neck and head support to your loved one. A possible drawback is that it is a single stroller hence cannot be expanded to a double stroller. It features the standard front wheels’ suspension with plastic wheels. These are not so great on certain terrains, which might limit your strolls.

Features

  • Plastic wheels
  • 3-in-1 capabilities

By doing this, walking space is saved at the back for parents with long strides.

Using an UPPABaby Piggyback Ride along boards expands the strolls to a triple stroller. The UPPABaby Mesa infant car seat that the product comes with requires no adapters to connect onto the frame. This technique greatly minimizes any additional weight on board.

In as much as it doesn’t convert to a double stroller, these are still great functionalities for a single baby.

Graco Uno2Duo Stroller

Via: Amazon

Overview

In terms of affordability, this stroller is up there with the best. And since it starts off as a single stroller then expands to a double stroller, it gives a great value for the price. If you wish, you can buy the double tandem stroller, or start with the single then upgrade along the way.

When used as a single stroller, you have the option of either using a standard stroller seat, an infant car seat or a bassinet mode. Well, it doesn’t have a bassinet, but the seat converts to a bassinet, meaning you won’t buy a bassinet in the first place. It’s also nice to know that if choose to use a car seat instead, the stroller is compatible with other Graco car seats.

The conversion to a double stroller for your duo is made possible by the 5 inches in extension. Pulling back the stroller extends its base. From here, the decision on how to use it is yours. There is the option of a standing stroller and a tandem stroller for relatively older “cool” kids and babies.

Purchasing the second stroller seat makes it possible to have 4 more riding options. In total, this convertible stroller has 8 possible riding configurations as I will show you below. These positions may not be fancy as the other available options, but they’re still not that shabby for the price.

Features

  • 8 riding positions

  • Easy fold
  • 4-50 pounds
  • Weighs 37 pounds
  • 4 use modes with 1 child

Conclusion

When it comes to flexibility, value for money and convenience, no stroller beats a convertible stroller. These strollers literally grow with your family. You, therefore, want to make sure you buy the best at all times. I hope this article has been insightful enough for this purpose.

no stroller beats a convertible stroller

In this review, I think the Baby Jogger City Select Stroller In Onyx is the best convertible stroller. At its price range and the numerous configurations possible, it would be impossible to beat such excellent functionality.
